Le Gourmet Burger, Bishop St near DeMaisonneuve

After a longtime of considering writing food reviews I was reminded to write one by a friend today after she got sick from eating oysters at BierMarkt yesterday (the oysters were good, she just drank too much). I hate walking around hungry looking for something to eat, it usually makes for bad decision making. Sometimes I find I've discovered something in my starving delirium. Today, I may have discovered one of those.
I really wanted a salad with chicken, there's a good salad place above DeMaisonneuve on crescent, I think, called Kelley's, I think. Needless to say, I couldn't find the place... So, on this hot, sunny, foot blistering Montreal day, ended up at "Le Gourmet Burger". I've had a lot of great burgers all over montreal, I'm staring to think I'm a burger snob. Here's the experience as I'm living it now.

I wanted to know what was the preferred order in this joint and the girl suggested a burger and pointed at the choice I have for toppings. As I glossed over the small font of this list in awe she still didn't get that I wanted her to tell me what she thinks is good. There's lots of different types of meat to choose from; salmon, bison, chicken, and sloppy joe's. I ordered an $6 beef burger and asked her to suggest some toppings, again no help as she pointed to the list of topping for about 1-3$ each. Without thinking I ordered bacon, fried egg and Boursin cheese, since the lettuce caramel onions and tomatoes are included. This is a creation made for me by the experts at QDC Burger (not saying more until it's own review).
Ok, now I'm told the interact machine isn't working, but I can go to the bar across the street to get cash. I agreed, on condition she gives me the $3 cheese topping free since that's what I ended up paying at the ATM. She at first said flat out with capital "NO", but the guy on the grill suggested we should "call the boss" since he is the real stickler. Over some quiet talk on the phone she confirmed that the cheese is free* (it wasn't).
So as I'm waiting for my order after returning from the ATM I can see that they haven't started my burger although I was the only one taking an order. What, I'm not coming back after all that? Possible, maybe it's my long hair... So more waiting as she's advising the next set of customers only when they're reaching for their plastic pay cards after ordering. Took a while but the girl calls me over to collect my food myself... I go over and the guy making the burger put Swiss instead of Boursin, he noticed before serving it to me, but not before I noticed that they charged me for Swiss cheese ($2). WTF! Didn't say anything. But I had to sit back down for a few minutes. (He got the next guys order wrong too). She calls me over and points to a low table where my burger and drink is on a board that I would scale a fish on. Why didn't they just tell me to grill my own burger?
Not expecting much at this point but to fill my stomach, I snap a picture and take a bite. Melted in my mouth, it was a brilliant marriage of beef bacon and egg brought to you by caramel onions. It's super good! The beef was very tender. Missing the tomatoes, but that's probably for the best. Good burger, I might come back when the interact is working to try something different, but not before I wash out the taste of stinginess left in my mouth by this place. Decent beef burger, "whatever" attitude towards service. I'm impressed but not at the same time. The one customer next to me had the bison burger and said it was really good too.

"Eat first" : first Mtl Foods blog post

Montreal has an abundance of different foods from all over the world, there's definitely something that will serendipitously delight anyone who stroll through this very walkable city. Meanwhile, during this influx of culture, Mtl retains it's standards and staples from decades before... The intent of my blog is to document my experience eating out, inspired by the fact that it's much easier to do so when living downtown. There's the potential to serve as a reference to good/bad food, so feel free to comment and critique. I'm going to end this intro to start lunch and subsequently my first review.
Bon appetite!
